So, as two comic book fans, how high do you rate the Watchmen graphic novel series?

GERARD: I think you'd be hard pushed to find anyone that
didn't rate Watchmen as the greatest, most important graphic novel ever
created. People in bands will talk about getting a certain 7-inch
single and that one song changing their life and getting them into punk
rock or whatever, but I got the Watchmen when I was 15 and that kinda
made me do everything that I've ended up doing. Watchmen was as
important to me as any band. It totally plugged me into going to punk
clubs at the time and seeing bands, I didn't see any difference between
reading Watchmen and listening to My War by Black Flag.

FRANK: I got into Watchmen later than Gerard, I'm sure, but I
first encountered the comic via a friend who knew I was a huge Batman
fan. He bought me a copy and the second I started to find out about the
characters it struck me as something amazing and different. I just fell
in love with it because there's just so much more to it than your
normal superhero comic.

So how did you come to be involved with the movie?

GERARD: Xavier Ramos, who does our marketing at Warners, ended
up doing the soundtrack and he knew how much of a fan I was of the book
so he got in touch with the people doing the movie and ran an idea by
them. And so in 2007, when we were on Projekt Revolution, we were on
the bus and I got a call from Zack Snyder, the director, and we just
started talking about the movie and we were exactly on the same page
when it came to the song and what we wanted it to do. When he said,
"How would you wanna do this Dylan cover?", I brought up a song by Jim
Carroll, the author of 'The Basketball Diaries', called 'People Who
Died' as a reference point. And earlier we'd been talking about Zack's
remake of Dawn Of The Dead, which me and the band has seen at the
theater, and he said, "Well, if you remember the end of that movie
that's the song playing the end credits', so we knew an approach like
that would work.

FRANK: The first thing that came into my mind when I heard we
were going to be on the soundtrack was "Holy shit, Gerard must be
shitting himself!". I was psyched, like, "Wow, this is incredible".
Being a fan of the series for so long and then hearing what was gonna
be behind the movie gave me so much faith in how it was gonna turn out.
My first question was just, "Do we get to see the movie?". I'm still
waiting! But that's cool, if I have to wait in line the day it comes
out I'll be there.

Are you Bob Dylan fans?

FRANK: Yeah, I've been a fan of Dylan since my dad used to
play me his records. Highway 61... is just such a great record. And I
just thought that it was such a great idea to choose this song for this
movie. Dylan was such an amazing poet and what he was trying to say in
that song really holds true for what they're trying to get across with
this film. I'm a huge fan of Dylan's poetry and this song is an amazing
example of it.

GERARD: And obviously we approached the song with a ton of
respect. I had it on my i-pod and I played it for the guys and
obviously the original is over 11 minutes long so we had to figure out
what we were gonna do with it. I chose the verses with lyrics that were
most pertinent to Watchmen and arranged it down to three minutes. We
wanted to go for a Sex Pistols type approach, but I actually played one
of the mixes to Steve from MSI and he said, "I think it kinda sounds
like Slade!".

FRANK: There are certain things you don't fuck with: You don't
fuck with The Beatles, you don't fuck with the Stones, and it's very
hard to fuck with Dylan. But as far as I know, he has heard us cover
the song and does approve, which definitely eases some of the anxiety
about it. Maybe someone was just telling is that to make us feel
better, but until Bob Dylan comes up to me and says "You fucking
butchered my song" I'm gonna believe that he liked it!

Was it exciting to be all back playing in one room again?

GERARD: It was really exciting. Rich Costey actually commented
to me during the session on how well we work together and how much we
clearly enjoy being in the same room together. We were kinda miserable
at the end of the last tour - and I say that very carefully, because
being in a band is the best thing in the world - but you can obviously
do anything too much, and I think we ended up pushing things too far,
to the point where it was very difficult to imagine performing for a
very long time. So when we got back together all the fatigue had gone
and the energy and excitement was definitely back.

And did reconvening for the recording increase your hunger to get the band back together properly?

GERARD: Yeah. A lot of Rock history was at Electric Lady and
the energy in that building was really great, and it was so exciting. I
literally could have started work on the next album right then: we all
have songs and I could have hit 'record' right then. So we've used the
momentum of that session to get us into the mood for making the next
record.

FRANK: Absolutely. It definitely sparked our creative juices. We've been looking forward to starting ever since.

Does it feel like you've been off the scene for a long time?

GERARD: Well, the time has gone really quickly. I don't feel
like we've been off that long, but in terms of our career I guess it's
a long time. There was a point on the last album when we were extremely
exposed and you need to go away for a bit to re-invent everything and I
think enough time has gone by for that now. After the session for the
Watchmen, Ray came out to LA for a week and we hung out and worked on
stuff, and Bob was here too looking for a house, so we kinda played
around: I was on bass, Ray was on guitar and Bob was on drums and then
we'd switch instruments. It was great. And then everyone came out to
shoot the video and we got together and before we knew it, we had three
or four songs. It was very natural.

FRANK: There's always the fear that when you get back together
that no one will have anything and no one will be feeling inspired, but
that changed within the first hour. There's no awkwardness, it's just
fun. When we decided to take a break and the last show happened, the
first week after that was like, "Holy shit, this is a long time". After
a week or two we all called one another and said (nervously), "Alright,
I know we're gonna take a break, but er, do you think we should come
together and start playing again?". But we held off because we knew we
needed the break: we didn't want to stay away from each other for so
long but we knew it would be beneficial for us.

You don't necessarily seem like a West Coast kinda person, Gerard, so how are you enjoying life in LA?

GERARD: You know I'm not a West Coast kinda person, but I
definitely didn't come here for the night life or the partying. But
having grown up in New York a lot and having gone to art school there I
really enjoy the art community here: I have more friends that are
artists here than I do back home. There's a real energy to being out
here that I love, and there's a lot of opportunities that you can get
caught up in. You can also get caught up in the bullshit that people
throw around but I've a pretty good detector for that stuff, so I can
avoid it.

Are your neighbors aware that they have a couple of rock stars in their
midst? Or are you just that weird couple in the nice neighborhood?

GERARD: I think they've figured it out, but on our street
everyone is really nice and interesting in their own right, so it's not
treated like this big crazy weird thing. We live in a part of LA that's
home to a lot of artists and musicians so we're not a novelty in the
area.

I imagine that fatherhood is playing on your mind a lot of the moment.

GERARD: Yeah, I'm very excited about it. It's been interesting
too because we've changed our website to this kind of blog and I
haven't commented on it yet - though obviously we released a press
statement about it - not because it's so personal that I'm not gonna
comment upon it, but just really that I don't know how to begin to even
start talking about something like that. There's still certain things
we don't know, we don't know the sex for instance, but we know the baby
is healthy and it's growing great, and we're really excited about that.
It was a surprise, and it's really awesome. It's weird, it wasn't like
it was a big deal to people as I thought it might have been: like when
I told Ray and told the guys everyone was really psyched but it wasn't
like, "Oh my God!". Everyone was just really genuinely excited for us.
It's totally crazy to be the first one in the band to become a
father... I don't know that I ever thought about having a kid, but then
I also didn't expect to meet Lindsey, and when I met her I knew she'd
be the one person I could have a kid with.

(AWWW!)

And are you looking forward to being an uncle, Frank?

FRANK: Absolutely. I'm already pressuring for the title of Godfather!

We're continually bombarded by MCR fans asking "when are My Chem
back?". So have you any final message for the people hanging on
patiently for your return?

GERARD: Well, the people who support us are always really
great, creative, smart and funny individuals and we really appreciate
their patience. I'm sure they know that we wanna make the right record.
But we feel that we have momentum, which will end up leading to
something very visceral and quick. We don't want another Black Parade
experience where it feels drawn out and we're generally unhappy when
we're making it. I'm not sure how it will sound, but we're pretty
excited to make a rock album.

FRANK: The stuff that we jammed on in December is straight
forward rock 'n' roll and it shot us full of adrenaline, but as far as
that ending up on the record, who knows. When we wrote The Black Parade
the original intent was to strip everything down, and obviously it
ended up being a high concept, high production values album. So if we
gave you an idea now, it'll very probably have changed by the time it
comes out.

    news

hi! its bob

it's been a long time since since we have talked. i just wanted to
say hi and fill people in on what has been happening with us. as a
whole we are all getting ready to get rolling again. we really needed
this break but enough is enough already. i cant wait to see the
refreshed and excited MCR again. no more falling asleep at 5pm, no more
drinking 20 red bulls, just good times coming up.

i will start with myself. my weird zoro scar on my wrist is going
down finally. i have been doing physical therapy every few days now
which is helping out a ton. i have to sit and lift tiny weights over
and over again until i cant anymore, then i play with putty, then i
stack cups, sometimes i squeeze plastic, play with rice, etc. It kinda
feels like when i was in kindergarten day care except it hurts. my
favorite part is hearing the stories of the other patients. one lady
fell down her stairs because she tripped on her cat and broke her
shoulder. i try not to laugh but i cant help it. i was actually sitting
with a player from the bears last week too. that guy was about 20 feet
tall and as big as a house. i didn't look him in the eye. i think i
have a couple months before i am back to playing again. i am always
going to have pain in my hand so i will be changing my playing a bit. i
have to rearrange my drums and i will need to play waaay lighter. dont
call me a p@$^y when you see me.

Other then that i am just hanging out. i got another dog! i now have
two black german shepherds. they rule. they are my buddies. i am going
to bring them everywhere with me. toro got a new puppy too. frank has
19 dogs now. i shot up up my garage with a pistol and the cops came.
that was fun..... i also have been playing halo again. halo and legos
is actually part of therapy for me. i just hit level 35 which is
awesome for me. i would love to challenge anybody to a duel. my xbox
name is dixiediarrhea (long story, my dogs name is dixie, she had
diarrhea). if anyone knows souljaboy personally please let him know i
challenge him. that guy seems like an awesome dude and i want to play
against him. he says he can beat anyone. dixiediarrhea says
differently. i will bet 2 dollars that i whoop him.

anyway, i see that im rambling. im tired. i was going to fill you in
on everyone else but i dont want to anymore. hahaha. which actually
brings me to a point. we are soon going to launch a new website. its
going to be very simple and to the point. one of the new features will
be us typing in on our phones straight to the site so everyone can tell
you themselves what they are up to. now that we are coming out of MCR
hibernation we want to keep everyone informed and to maybe have some
fun. blogathon 5000. i will type in all the juicy details like perez
hilton.

ok. im going to bed. me and my friend, the sanch, and dixie are
about to drive from chicago to los angeles to hang with gerard and
friends. come hang out.
gerard’s address is 2800 E Observatory Rd Los Angeles, CA 90027. see you there. bring fun.

see everyone soon or on halo

EXCLUSIVE: Gerard Way on Zombies and Hair Color at the 2008 Scream Awards

Many
of you have already seen photos of My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way on
the red carpet at last night's Scream Awards. I've heard several
reactions that all seem to say that fans are pretty shocked at his hair
(it's not pink anymore!) and by his "ugly" shoes (brown, knee-high
round-toed boots). Well stop freaking out because I was there, I had a
camera, I took pictures of him, and EXTREMELY on your behalf. If it
were left up to me I would've asked him something about whether or not
he was actually planning to turn the Tom Waits/William Burroughs
musical "The Black Rider" into a graphic novel - because that's what
I'm interested in. But time was of the essence, so I only got the
skinny on how he'd survive the Zombie Apocalypse and why his hair was
no longer red - s'cuse me, pink (he corrected me.) All of this while
literally staring up into his nostrils. Seriously. Look:

His
hair doesn't look that bad. I thought you guys hated it when he dyed it
pink? And now that it's pretty freshly black you're complaining? What
do you want from the man? Should he just shave his head? I asked him
why he changed the color again, and he told me, "Because I was in a
wedding, and the pink didn't match the wedding." You'd go from pink
back to black too, if you were gonna be in a wedding and your hair
didn't match the decor. Cut him some slack. He is not "going Michael
Jackson" on you like I've seen in some recent comments. When I asked
Gerard whose wedding it was, he merely responded with, "a friend..."
and continued to wring his hands and stare at me nervously:

I
told him regardless, you guys were all gonna freak out when you saw the
photos and he laughed a little. He seemed pretty excited to answer my
next question, though, "So, Buzznet wants to know how you, Gerard,
would survive the Zombie Apocalypse." He sat on this one for a while -
quite a while. I think everyone around me was pretty pissed off because
they wanted to ask him stupid stuff about how he was feeling about the
Umbrella Academy's nomination for Best New Comic Book, and if the movie
rumors were true (they are.) All of these are totally relevant
questions, but in the interest of YOU GUYS, I really only had to know
why his hair wasn't pink and how he'd survive when Zombies attack.
After looking at the sky for a bit and a lot of "Hmmm"-ing, Gerard
quietly replied, "..... I wouldn't. Yea. I wouldn't survive at all. No
chance. I'd get eaten." And shrugged his shoulders. Ladies, I'm no MCR
fangirl but I'll admit - it was pretty damn cute. Made me wish I had a
video cam so I could show you all the whole thing, but I figured really
close up body shots and getting some of these answers would be suitable
enough. ;-)

Finally, stop dogging on the man's boots already!
They were downright AMAZING, and were honestly the first thing I
noticed when I spotted him. I had to digest what I was looking at
before I realized they were on Gerard Way's feet. Extreme close-up:

Those are not, by any means, what I would consider "ugly" boots. I
might re-think the brown with the black issue but I'm telling you those
things must've cost a fortune. And they were pretty damn perfect for
the segment in the space pod he did at the end of the show. I refuse to
give you spoilers, so you'll have to watch the show on Tuesday October
21st to find out what I mean. Newageamazon is liveblogging the event, so don't forget to check that out - it's sure to be a... scream!

What
do you guys think? Do you hate or love the Gee's new hair? How about
the boots? Do you think the Umbrella Academy will win best comic?

A MESSAGE FROM GERARD

    news

Hey guys,

Gerard here... I'm hanging out with Mikey in New Jersey, relaxing,
drinking coffee, talking comics, and getting ready to take a drive down
south tomorrow. I don't know what states I'm passing through but I know
where I'm heading. Don't worry, I've got a the Clockwork Orange
audiobook, a Dr. Pepper air-freshener, and a GPS so I don't get lost.
We figured by now everyone that's a fan of the band might be wondering
what we're up to, what we're planning, so I thought I'd write this
letter and fill you all in.

We're living, decompressing- The Black Parade took over two years to
tour and six months to make so that's a lot of existing in a fictional
world, and we're just extremely happy to live in a real one for a
while. One thing I can let you know is that we're excited. Genuinely
more excited than we have ever been to be in this band, make some new
music. And we have ALL been writing new material in our own separate
worlds... I started a week after I got home, buying a good rig, an old
Jag, and a bunch of pedals- just searching for the next sound.

Bob is recovering well from his recent wrist surgery- exceedingly
well considering how risky the procedure can be. We're all really happy
that when he picks up the sticks again he won't be in the intense pain
he was in during the last year of touring. It's going to take him a
while to rehabilitate but knowing him, he will most likely be playing
the drums before the doctor says it's a good idea. He just loves
playing, we all do. Franks on the road with Leathermouth and Reggie and
The Full Effect so you should go see them and get spit on. I know
Leathermouth doesn't have a record out yet, but Frank gave it to me in
Mexico and I can easily say it's my favorite post-hardcore record of
the year, so I know you will at least enjoy the songs if you don't know
the words.

One of the best parts of the last five months was getting to see Ray
get married and all of us be a part of the wedding. It was beautiful.
I'm not sure where the happy couple is right now but I am sure wherever
they are, they are really enjoying it. I have never seen him happier in
my life. So we made plans to get together soon and make some demos, see
where our heads are at, take it slow. If explosions happen in our heads
right away who knows how soon we could have a record out, we aren't in
any rush but we get just as anxious as you to find out what the next
"thing" is going to be.

So that about wraps it up... I'm glad I could stop by for a chat, I
think I will do it more often. I'm writing more comics, writing more
music, and missing my wife right now. Oh, and I heard a rumor that I
died in a car accident. I didn't.

xo.

<xscript>injectFluxWidget('ContentAction', {addToMyFeeds: true, uri: 'mgid:uma:content:shared:1592678'});</xscript>Last month, MTV News broke the news that New Jersey's own My Chemical Romance would be recording a cover of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" for Zack Snyder's forthcoming "Watchmen" film
and that the song would be the soundtrack's first single when it hits
stores this winter. That's cool and all, but what about the band's next
studio effort? When can we expect that gem?

Well, not for a long while. See, My Chemical Romance have spent
much of the last few years in promotional mode — touring, doing press
interviews, shooting videos, etc. At the moment, they're in what
frontman Gerard Way dubbed "go live" mode: They've all put MCR on the
backburner as they pursue outside interests.

Of course, Way's been working on his comic book series, "The
Umbrella Academy," and is penning a top-secret project for DC Comics.
Meanwhile, his brother, Mikey Way, is also working on a comic book,
Frank Iero is starting a new band called Leathermouth, Ray Toro is busy
getting married and helming his Weezer cover band, and Bob Bryar, well,
he's in Chicago for some unspecified reason. The point is, My Chemical
Romance need to live like the rest of us for a bit before they return
to the studio.

"We can't make any more music unless we live," Way explained.
"But I'm already starting to get the ideas and the aesthetics and
everything, and it's very different from [2006's] The Black Parade."

How so, Gerry?

"It's hard to say at this point, but musically, how Black Parade
tapped into the glam, classic rock of Queen and Ziggy Stardust, this
taps into something different — not punk, but maybe in its proto sense.
The aesthetic — it is extremely different, and it is more stripped-down
too. When we get a chance, we're going to get together and do some
demos and start rolling. But we're going to take it slow. I feel like
we needed to be away for a while. People need to kind of miss us
because there was a point in the last two-and-a-half years where you
could have seen us at least once a month if you wanted."

Way elaborated on the album's sound, contradicting recent
reports that the band is moving in a more punk direction. "It's weird —
sometimes you give interviews, and they catch you in a weird mood on
the road, and you're like, 'Nah, I didn't say it was going to be a more
punk-rock record, I just thought it would be more stripped of the bells
and whistles,' " he explained. "But I think the concepts will always be
progressive.

"It will be more direct, more about life, and have more social
commentary in there," Way continued. "That's where it's kind of heading
now. It won't be a 'boohoo' record about 'Oh, we got famous,' but a
commentary on how the world is now."
